I also posted in the career change area, but don't seem to be getting responses.

I recently decided that I had enough of the retail and restaurant industry. I have 12+ years experience between these two areas. I have a 2 year old an have decided to change careers because of her.  I still like to be in charge but am also willing to relinquish some control.  What I would really like is to be a file clerk in a law or medical office.  What I am worried about is that employeers will see this as a step down.  How do I explain to someone that my family is important and comes first but that I am a hard worker and give 100% at work, but I want to leave work at work and not have the 24/7 life of a retail/restaurant manager. I rely heavily on my personality and interview terribly( because I tell the truth  even when It could hurt my prospects) I feel like my integrity is too important to give up just for a job.

It seems like it is impossible to get my foot in the door.  Any advice?

I agree, there are going to be employers that will think you are taking a step down, and will feel you are 'over' qualified for certain positions. But you can sign up with a few temp agencies in your area, and explain to them your motives, and let them find you something. Once you get your foot in the door, the employer probably could care less about the step down. You may also find that you are going to have to constantly make it known that you are willng to commit to the other position. Good luck
