Yes, I am. When I started to teach, the men would congregate in the lounge and rate the women. Many of the comments were quite crude or demeaning. One day I had enough, and I asked them what they would do if a male coworker treated their wives like that.  My question embarrassed some of them. Afterwards, their comments were more respectful or out of earshot of the women.

Other teachers and I worked to make coaching pay more equitable. Men and women had parity in teaching salaries, but female coaches were paid 50% less than males. A former student sued the school board about equal funding for girls sports.

I'M IN!  I'M IN!  Here's what being a feminist means to me:

1.  Actively exploring my values to define my own personal definition of feminism.  Facing my own fears of the F-word.

2.  Acting in alignment with my definition by responding to sexism in a mature, caring, and intelligent way, wherever possible.

3.  Treasuring my right to vote.

4.  Being sensitive to other oppressed groups (gender identities, sexual orientations, races and ethnicities, the physically challenged, the poor, etc.)

5.  Supporting positive representation of oppressed groups in arts and entertainment.

6.  NEVER being ashamed to be emotional.  Knowing that tears (like laughter) make me stronger.

7.  Wallowing lavishly in the knowledge that my vagina PROVES I am sacred.

8.  Remaining very clear about the fact that men are not the enemy - patriarchy is.

9.  Enjoying my femininity's TRUE power to its fullest and enjoying men when they express theirs.  Vive la difference!

Thanks, Dianne for a great discussion starter.  Paula
