We have a male Labrador. When he was a puppy, he would bark every time he saw his own image in the patio door. We surmised that he missed his litter of ten. Another time, he decided to play in his water bowl instead of drinking the water. He had both front paws in the bowl; I guess he liked the splashing. Labs love the water. One day I ran a bath for my son and left the bathroom door open. I went to turn off the water tap, and my dog was inside the tub. One year, we bought the dog reindeer antlers to wear on Christmas. He didn't like the antlers on his head and somehow managed to remove them.

He is a delightful dog, but now he is so old that he sleeps most of the day. His arthritis keeps him from being playful so his walks are very short.

The first kitty in my life after I awoke from the coma was black and white tuxedo, girl. We met under strange circumstances and she became my life long friend, and moved in with me 6 months later. She cuddled up next to my heart every night for many years there after, quietly showing me the softest meows and purrs possible.

The second kitty: One night I was headed home after practice and made a wrong turn, and ended up looking at a very wrong situation. In the middle of the road a man was abusing a cat and I interrupted. I took the cat to the hospital and learned he was 15 and was blind and deaf from trauma. I adopted him from the shelter and in the following years learned how one purrs like a tractor and howls like a lion.

Upon coming home from work I discovered the two of them together, cuddling in the sun and I am sure it was the biggest smile ever upon my face. I smile as I remember today.

Tuxedo girl lived to be 21 years old and orange tabby, about 17 years.

KJ - I relate to the OLD Kitties and strgreg11 the old dog too! We lost our German Sheppard Bit last fall. She was a reject from the seeing eye dog school - which made her an amazing pet.

Wiley - my 17 year old cat is a bit mangy now, but he has been though my adult life with me. When I moved for WA to CA I leash trained him and he rode in the car like a dog would!

When I was very young, third grade and before young, my mom owned a cattery that bred Persians, so we had more than 20 cats. My mom bred a blue-and-white one, Samson, and then she got rid of the cattery and we had to move. We gave away every cat except for Sam, and he's like the king of our household. He doesn't bite or scratch ever, but he still manages to demand that we pay attention to him every second of every day.

In fact, at the moment, he's got our back door's blinds on the verge of breaking by holding them open with his body, because he wants to sunbathe. Go figure.

We had a greyhound at one point.   On one of the test runs of leaving him out unattended he decided to have some fun.  Aparently a bathroom door and pantry door had been left open or not closed well enough.  My kids still swear he learned how to open doors,  which honestly was possible.  When I came home from the store and entered through the garage, the first thing I saw was rice, instant mash potatoes and cereal all over the floor.  I held my cool as I walked into the living room only to see the dog standing on the couch with a roll of toilet paper in his mouth and strands of toilet paper everywhere.  He had TP'd my living room!!  He had thrown it in the air over the ceiling fan, it was on the enteretainment center, the fireplace oh it was just everywhere LOL.  And Red just looked at me cocked his head, wagged his tail and had the expression of oh wow mom you caught me, like what I did with the house expression LOL.  Who could stay to mad at that,  oh I grumbled a little at him while cleaning it up, made him sit and watch me.  Unfortunatly when he injured himself on our deck twice we couldn't keep him,  it just wasn't safe.  But we do have some really great memories of him at our home.

I inherited a cat once.  I had no real way of knowing her age.  We guessed her to be about three, but she had been passed from home to home and was under threat of being gassed as unwanted.  So, I took her in.  She was nervous around children, so she didn't play with my daughter.  She'd had her ears and tail pulled once too often.  But she loved me.  She had no front claws.  She spent a good deal of her time with me in my lap, and she loved to put her chin and one paw across one of my shoulders and the other paw across my other shoulder, like a hug.  She never did get fleas, even though we lived in an area where fleas were a real problem.  But she used to like to go outside and pick fights with other cats.  Somehow, I always managed to be at the door in time to see her streaking across the estate's car park towards my door.  She counted on me to have the door open so that she could escape a thrashing from the cat chasing her!  When I would go shopping, she expected a tin of tuna, and knew how to look for it in the bags, which were left on the floor while I was getting things put away.  If for some reason I had forgotten the tuna, her tail would go stiff and straight up, she would put her chin up and would stalk out of the kitchen on very stiff legs, to let me know of it.  She insisted on sleeping with me.  She would wait until I was cozy under the covers, and then she would come up to my pillow and wriggle under the blankets.  I usually woke up with a furry bottom in my face.  I do not know why she liked to do that.  She liked to sit on wet surfaces, so she would sit in the tub after we had a bath.  She would sit in the sink when I was trying to brush my teeth or clean the sink.  I have never found how she got paw prints on the walls.  She didn't travel well.  I moved to another town just 50 miles away, and she was quite ill for a week.  In addition to the car sickness that we had to deal with for 50 miles.  So, when I had to move out of state a few years later, I gave her to my next-door neighbour.  Several years later, I was talking to a friend of mine who still lived on that estate, and she told me that my cat still sat next to my back door waiting for me to come back.  I had spoiled her senseless.  I'm sure she's dead by now, that was 25 years ago.  But some pets you never forget.

My one puppy, Junior likes to take his blanket from his kennel and bring it to bed.  He also walks all over the house carrying that blanket.  Maybe we should have named him Linus.   (There are lots of pictures of him in my albums).

One year we bought our Lab reindeer antlers for Christmas. He had them chewed off in seconds. No surprise! He also managed to chew through a surgical collar so he would not lick his stitches.

Obviously I'm crazy about my cat, so much so that I've used her picture and appropriated her name as my WomenCo profile. I feel a bit bad about the picture, though. The blue collar was part of a getup she had to wear after she was injured, to make sure she didn't lick the wounded area. She absolutely hated wearing it. Cat's have a lot of pride, and in truth, she looked pretty ridiculous in it. And she knew it.

Anyway, today is her 14th birthday, and she's getting all kinds of fishy treats, plus a turkey bone (her favorite) in celebration.
