Myspace Vs. Facebook

Posted 3 months ago I want to know which one is better for business networking and overall for students looking to post their work for a job. Myspace sounds more like a social thing but Facebook sounds like it falls on both the social aspect and the business aspect. So now it comes to opinions, which one do YOU think is better and why? | Posted 3 months ago Hi! I like them both. As far as networking goes they both have great features. I find that Facebook is a little more professional looking where MySpace can be customized any way you would like. I have found more friends, family and networking opportunities on Facebook but then since MySpace is restricted from work it is hard to network on that site like I should be. I think that it really depends on your preference and what you find more user friendly. I utilize both because there are always those people out there that will use one and not the other and it gives you a larger networking audience. Good Luck! - Jenn

| Posted 3 months ago I personally prefer Facebook. I think if you are a musician Myspace is better in getting your music heard to the massess quickly in a single place. It all depends on your personal objective. |

| Posted 3 months ago Laura, I don't really think either of those sites is for professional networking -- except, of course, if you're a musician, in which case MySpace is great. Sites like this one and LinkedIn are much better for professional networking. My 2 cents! Daniela

| Posted 3 months ago I have to agree w/ the last 2 here. I use mine (myspace) for contacting old friends I'd lost contact w/ (who otherwise I wouldn't be in touch with bc this was the easiest way to find them) and blogging poetry - I don't see it or facebook as a professional ntwork. I've used it for job searching once in awhile but that's it as far as the professional side. I do agree that it's great for mucisians as a professional and social ntwork to get the music out there. BUT myspace is always changing and updating - who knows, it may become great for both professional & social ntwkg. | Posted 3 months ago Thanks for the help, I decided facebook for school (everyone at my school is using it) and LinkedIn for work. "The brick walls are not there to keep us out. | Posted 3 months ago Considering that Facebook was originally intended for college students, I think it's best to keep it that way. It's fun to connect with old friends and maybe network in that since, but as far as being professional, keep the facebook address off the resumes. Myspace is just a big fun waste of time. |

| Posted 2 months ago I don't think either should be used"professionally", especially for marketing yourself. However, they can be useful depending on the profession. One such use is working at a university. Hated both these social networking sites until my job forced me onto Facebook! It is honestly the best mechanism for commincating with students and allowing yourself to be accessible to them. It has also allowed me to form other relationships with professional staff & faculty who also use the site. I always prefer to in-person meetings, phone calls or email- but it has allowed me access to colleagues who I may not come across otherwise, and has helped me increase my department's visibility across the university. As a side note, I use Goggle, MySpace and Facebook as 'checks' when hiring student employees- as well as professional staff. We are trying to educate our students that what they have posted is available for anyone (including future employers) to see- and employers are checking. I hold students accountable for the content of their personal pages, and discuss what a future hiring manager may think. They then discover and either enact privacy settings, or simply delete or reject questionable material. Keep that in mind if you do use the "social" side of networking sites and are concerned about some content that may have been posted (by other people as well), there are cyber cleaners available to help remove past web exploits that may come up if a potential employers searches your name. They are not foolproof, but can definitely help! Korina Anja |

| Posted 2 months ago I would have to say that using social websites depends on what industry you are working in. I began using Myspace a few years ago when I was a promoter for clubs in NYC, for that it was perfect. There was a huge network of "clubbers" already on there and I used it to produce guest lists and send out flyer, and it was very effective. Face book is not as good in my opinion because you have to be someones friend to see their profile, interests, groups and friends. It is not as oriented around meeting new people as it is finding ones you already know. You can pretty much find forums and groups of every topic and interest on Myspace. |

| Posted 2 months ago I dislike both sites as a networking tool. It may just be my personality, but I really hate having six million places to check things. With the growing obession of Facebook and Myspace, I got tired of the people writing on the wall, meme's being posted in the journals, and other spam that I kept getting in exchange for the one or two good things that either was good for. I have to admit though, I'm tempted to get a new Facebook account not associated directly to me so I can promote Insanitek, my own company. I'm just leery about it. I don't want people to think that it is the best and primary way of reaching me or my company. Insanitek: Powered by Creative Minds. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I love LinkedIn. I use facebook and myspace though myspace is just for kicks. Facebook is a little bit more on the serious and professional site which I like. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Hello, I prefer Facebook. Its easier to find friends you went to school with and worked with I feel. I do agree with Daniela in that neither of them are for Business purposes, they are more for personal enjoyment.

| Posted about 1 month ago Yeah, we're having alot of controversy over here over the fact that some employers have been using what they see on Myspace, Youtube and Facebook to decide whether or not they should hire a person, and it isn't going over well with the general public. I would guess that means that people really don't want the business world mixing with what they see as a venue for their private life. I'm on Facebook, but only for the sake of a couple of friends who use it more than Myspace. I'm on Myspace for everyone else. It makes it easier to share thousands of pictures with friends and family. And I do have many, many pictures! For professional networking, I use this site and HRGuru. I've been told before that I should try linkedin, so I'm going to have to look into it. Though it must be said, I already spend hours every day on the two I'm already with! |
