Is age an important factor ?

Do you think a mention of date of birth  on your  résumé is an an absolute essential?Would it make a difference to a job(for a desk job) application if the person seeking the job was 32 instead of  23?


I have always had my date of birth printed on my résumé,but I have always wondered if age should be a deciding criteria for an employer while hiring an employee unless ofcourse the job or the post strictly caters to a certain age group.


What are your thoughts?

In the US it is illegal to ask for that information and I suggest not giving them any thing they cannot have! And Rasika, I know you are not in the US, so laws are different, but if a US employer posted a job and put an age range, it would be a lawsuit!

Unfortunately as we get older we are all at hazard of age discrimination, although I believe that being 23 or 32  does not fall under that category. Being 32 may be better (in this particular instance) than 23 for that job because it indicates that you may be more mature, have some prior work experience, and a higher level of work ethic.


In the US, employers are not allowed to ask your age on a application; however, if you make it past the first interview based on the resume without your age being challenged you may still fall under the scrutiny of the interviewer at your second interview. They most likely would not tell you that your age was the reason you did not get the job, even if it was a factor.


I believe that we just need to be proud of our age and experience, put it out there so that there are no surprises later and get on with the task at hand.

Remember, any half way smart person can figure out your "age" based on the years of experience you have, give or take a few years. Debi is right, it can still happen that they will discriminate against you based on age whether they flat out know the year you were born or not!

I personally think age could be an advantage but not especially true these days. There are alot of job seekers out there today and I wonder if they're looking for the younger crowd. I'm 55 and  not sure about the job market anymore. Any suggestions would be helpful.

In my country (Mauritius) we have to put our DOB and Relationship status on the resume. I found it cool while preparing my resume for the USA that I have to ommit all those personal information and that it was illegal.. but when you apply on the employers or employment agency websites, it is a mandatatory field that you fill in the EEO... they say it is voluntary.. yet if you do not fill it in... you cannot send the application... so what about this?

Hi jo_islandgirl no - it cannot be mandatory, when you apply, even online, there should be a way to "opt out" at this time on the EEO. My partner will not fill it out prior to an interview, as he is black and feels strongly that many managers still discriminate before meeting him. I agree though that it fells, for lack of a better word, "creepy" to be forced to make that decision, even for me as a "Caucasian" woman (which my family in Serbia and Italy think is funny - smile.


For the last 11 years I have taught managers these things, that's why I am familiar. Next week teaching it in SF, LA and NYC!

Not only that, but when you  appear for the  interview someone will request your ID for  “security”  purposes.  If  you  present your drivers license,  they have your DOB.  There are  ways of  concealing the practice of age, and even gender discrimination.  My thoughts are, give HR a lie detector test!  Honesty and  integrity should flow both ways.   I wouldn’t even want to work for a company that  didn’t  appreciate me for my individual skills and abilities.  That’s just me.
