Going back to School

Posted 4 months ago Ok, so I'm getting ready to go back to school. I am a single mom, and I work full time. I had looked into going back first to get the student loan sharks off my back, but as I looked into it, I found that I was truely excited about going. So, I started college after high school, but I was young, naive, and was trying to work full time, raise a baby alone, and school was put aside after 5 semesters. I had intended only to take a year off, but that was 13 years ago! Now, I am trying to decide what I want to take. I am only going to take one class per semester, and I have to decide whether to take classes towards my original degree, Psychology (although I'm not sure if I really want to be a Psychologist or Therapist anymore), classes that will help with my career as an Administrative Assistant, or just something that I enjoy, Art or Writing. This is where I ask for your help. What is your opinion on my dilemma? I really enjoy my job, and would love to expand within our company, being a Therapist brings in much more money to support my children, however, my heart longs to write, paint and sculpt for a living. What would you do? |

| Posted 3 months ago Maki: If you were an 18-year-old prospective college freshman, I'd say study art! It may or may not be what you end up doing for a living, but not worries, you have few responsibilities and everything ahead of you. Because you have children and are older, however, you do have a responsbility to them, and that changes a few things. If you love your job and want to gain more skills as an admin, then take classes that will help you do that. But if you think you can keep your job and open the path of therapist on the side, by taking classes at a local CC or something, then you'll be giving yourself options. Daniela

| Posted 3 months ago Maki, Maki, Maki, Go with your heart. It will never steer you wrong. They say that at the end of life people aren't usually sorry for what they did, but for what they DIDN'T do. I went back to school at age 44. I'm entering my senior year as a Communications major this fall. I have never loved anything so much. My mind and heart are full of ideas now. Spend a few minutes each day visualizing your ideal career. Savor the vision and enjoy experiencing it while you concentrate on it! You will find that people and opportunities will then come to you. That's called the Law of Attraction. Remember that in every field, there is always room for one more GOOD one, and there's enough money in it to pay for her. If you follow your heart, the universe will unfold for you in ways you cannot now possibly imagine. Move into what you love, Maki. It will carry you. Pjricher "There is no old age. There is, as there always was, just you." (Carol Matthau) |

| Posted 3 months ago Maki, Follow your heart and do what you love and enjoy. Since your time is precious, you don't want to spend it doing something you hate, which if you're like me, you'd give up fast. I know I have to be really interested in something to stick with it. Especially when it comes to "work", and let's face it going back to school, after that long, can be work. I myself just started at the University of Metaphysical Sciences after being out of high school 14 years, and I'm happy with my choice. It took me those 14 years to decide what I wanted to study. And another few months to find the right school. Good luck to you, Maki...and again, I think you should do what you love...That's a choice we can make as adults, to do something fun... Take care, Angie |

Anyway hearing you guys talk about going back( and being happy about it) is a wonderful boost. There have been times when I wondered if I would ever be able to get started but I'm starting to look at the rut that I"ve been in and go you know what this rut isn't all that big maybe I should try to get out of it. | Posted about 1 month ago Right now I'm actually talking to an consulor about taking some online classes in bussiness admin. I'm thinking accounting after that since it's online I'm going to get my associates first and then start the accounting classes. If I could do anything I'd want to also become fluent in Spanish and possibably French as well but I can't exectly do that online. PossibilityCoachTM says ...

| Posted about 1 month ago R_Sherman - How wonderful that you are looking at taking courses you are interested in pursuing. You have some great ideas. Let's begin with the end in mind. An Associates Degree will take you how long? What structures do you need to put in place to fulfill your commitment in getting your Associates Degree? How will you keep motivated? Taking French and Spanish would certainly add uniqueness to your resume. It sounds like moving toward International work. What do you think. Anything is Possible |

| Posted about 1 month ago It will take me 20 months to finish an associates degree online. Because the structure of online classes allows me to take the classes 2 at a time and finish them quickly I think that will help me stay motivated. I've always worked better when I constantly finishing something. However with taking classes online that means that I'll have to set my own guidelines for making sure that I"m logging the hours. I know that for the program that I'm taking I have to log in at least 4 times a week but they I don't have a set time or day to do this in. Which is an advantage and a disadvantage all at once cause I'm the one that has to keep me motivated. But it allows me to work whatever hours I need to and still have time to spend with family and friends. I have considered working abroad, but the main focus on taking French and Spanish espically is to set me apart here in the states. With the number of spanish speaking people constantly on the rise here in the states it can't hurt. Plus it's something that enjoy studying. Currently I know enough spanish to make a fool of myself but I've with just that much knowege been put in a position to have to use it. |

| Posted about 1 month ago R-Sherman - Here is a tip: See yourself finished in 20 months receiving your associates degree. Feel how proud you are - see your smiling face. Be in the moment. Successful people already see themselves succeeding. Then notice the action steps you are inspired to do in reaching your goal. Recently Tiger Woods won a championship with some sort of leg injury. I don't know the whole story, but what i do remember, it was unlikely he was going to win. His vision of being a winner is stronger than the pain. You getting your degree has to be stronger than the obstacles that come your way - and they will come. Success has its peaks and valleys. A challenge is your "gremlin" wanting to keep the status quo - remember you are not a status quo type of woman. You are strong - You are a winner. Read bios on leaders you admire and/or athletes. I believe one of the male twins on the U.S Olympic team is forgoing having surgery to be in the Olympics next month. I am not advocating ignorning health issues. I am pointing out winners who are committed to be the best. It is good you have a love of language. And as you pointed out Spanish will aide in being able to communicate with the growing population of Spanish speaking people and offer more opportunities. |
