I am reading Michael Chabon's "The Yiddish Policeman's Union." It is set in Sitka, Alaska which is the author's invention of a Jewish Settlement which developed after the defeat of the Jewish state of Israel in 1948. This is the vehicle for his story of a burned-out detective trying to redeem himself. I recommend it as a good read.

I have recently heard some rave reviews about the book - The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. I was told it was an excellent book, and to read it with a partner if possible. I was just curious if anyone had actually read it?

I'm reading A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley. It is a RIVOTING book. The plot thickens and the characters develop each passing chapter. It is actually a modern day version of Shakespere's King Lear. Smiley does a wonderful job modernizing the story and adding deeper, more complex psychological depth to the characters. Has anyone read it?

I am usually a literature snob but my best friend gave me Anthony Bourdain's "Kitchen Confidential" which is hilarious and also a surprisingly writerly book. Recommended for foodies everywhere!

Always waiting for the next Laurell Hamilton book although the last have been more sex then story, but Im still there for both her series. Kim Harrison's new one The Outlaw Demon Wails was another great addition to her series. Was out of books and picked one up at the super market the other day Devil May Cry by Sherrilyn Kenyon, half romance/ half sci-fi greek and sumerian gods battle it out with demons and the personal relationships. I read the Ruins, the new movie thats out. I had a feeling the book was going to be better then the movie. The ending still dissappointed. Doesnt anyone write an ending anymore, we are so hollywood everything has to have a sequel. I'm off the B&N website to locate my next book.....

I am reading "La Balsa de Piedra" (The Stone Raft) by Jose Saramago, a delightful novel in which the Iberic peninsula separates from the rest of Europe. I love the way he weaves stories, facts, images to get the reader into the environment of uncertainty and adventure the leading characters live.

I really enjoy Science Fiction/Fantasy novels (really, more fantasy novels come to think of it).  I just finished The Dark Mirror by Juliet Marillier, which is a terrific historical fantasy story.  Check out the description of this series on Wikipedia.

I've returned to Donald Barthelme's Sixty Stories -- for all of your post-modern lit fans, this is a real winner. It's also a great choice for those who enjoy short stories.

I just finished The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.  I love his newer works.

I have a trip coming up, and am going to take The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy with me.  Might also take King's Insomnia as well.

In the interim, I'm reading Cross by James Patterson.
