INFORMED OF LAY OFF IN NEAR FUTURE

Posted about 1 month ago Our entire company has been informed that we are soon to be laid off. However, we have not been given any dates to work with, but do know that we will receive 60-days notice. We will get a severance package, mine will be 9 weeks after 17 years of service. We will not receive the severance if we get a job before we are officially laid off. My dilemma is that my husband has been unemployed for quite awhile and I have always carried the health insurance and now pay the bills alone. I have already applied for several positions and signed on with a staffing agency, but with no luck so far. The advice I've been getting is that the company owes me the severance and I'd be insane not to wait for it. The job market here is very slow. I'm scared to death! What are your thoughts |

| Posted about 1 month ago I've been where you're at and its no fun. Ask yourself, what's more importmant, my health care, and an income that isn't going to end soon or the severance package? Personally, I'd start looking. Get you resume updated and get it out there, they economy might be slow, but you just never know who might be looking. If possible look for something part time now, don't rely on the severace, with taxes etc, it'll be gone before you know it. Jean Bentley

| Posted about 1 month ago Rosalia, I'm with Jean - start looking and networking NOW. If you find the right job before you are laid off, I suggest you take it. If you do NOT find the right job before you are laid off, then thank goodness for the groundwork you will have laid! Best of luck, Rosalia. Let us know how we can help you... Phyllis R. | Posted about 1 month ago Is it legal for a company to deny workers a severance package that is based on the number of years of service? Why are there conditions placed on the severance pay? I would check with your state's labor board. Donna Life is short. Embrace your friends and family with love. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I don't think it's illegal, because techincally they don't have to give you a severance package. I would spruce up my resume, and get it out there. If you don't find anything before the lay off you'll get 8 weeks of severance, and unemployment. If you don't find anything, you may have to opt for the very expensive cobra insurance package that will be offered. Best of luck to you. Ms. Antoinette M.
