Hello everyone,

After 11 years as an aerospace engineer I am changing to a career in biotech.  Right now I live in Seattle but within the next year I plan to move to San Francisco to live with my boyfriend as soon as I have found a job there.  Are there any biotech workers out there who would care to share about their career interests?  I also am getting into running, and I see there is a runners group on this site, which looks promising.  I'm also looking for new friends who enjoy their jobs and are willing to share their stories of building a career they love, leaving a career that didn't suit them, and how they dealt with negativity in the workplace.

Best wishes to all of you and I look forward to getting to know you better.

Hi Francesca,

Congrats on your upcoming move to CA. I'm in San Diego and moved here (from Fresno) with my own business without knowing a soul. The best way to deal with workplace negativism is to stay centered and focused and grateful. Gratitude always brings the positive in. It's simple but not always easy. Too bad most people don't realize how powerful the law of attraction is! They just get more of the things they complain about.

Establish personal boundaries. For example, determine that if being around someone brings you down, that you will spend as little time as possible with them. Enforcing your personal boundaries is a little more challenging. Figure out what you will do when you need to be around someone who brings down the mood. Like, visualize mirrors between you and them facing toward them. An Indian Medicine Man taught me that 24 years ago and it works like a charm! You can also determine that you will change the topic to something positive when with them.

As far as leaving careers that didn't suit me, I usually do it within a week of realizing I don't like it. I always trust my gut feelings and if something feels wrong, it is. A great tip for selecting friends boyfriends, etc. Using gut feelings when you first meet people is a great way to avoid getting into friendships that you later have to extricate yourself out of. Gut feelings don't have to make sense at the time and they are always right.

Visualize exactly what you want, in detail.

Thanks Kelly.  I use visualization a lot but I hadn't heard of the mirrors one, so thanks--I can add that to my toolbox.  I'm a big believer in following my gut, too.  You're right--we don't always know why something feels right or wrong, but our gut, or our "wise mind" as my therapist calls it, knows and is always right.

It's nice to meet someone else who uses positive visualization. I've used it for years to reach my goals.
