Posted about 1 month ago I do work all year around, here and there. I make blankets for preemies, the nursing home folks, and I carry them to the humane shelter. I always have a couple in my vehicle, and if I see someone that I "feel", I'll just hand them a blankie.......doesn't everyone need one? | Posted about 1 month ago Yes, they do, Sherrie, and you are awesome. One of my favorites (I have a lot!) is the Mary and Martha House in Ruskin, FL. This is a "House" for victims of domestic violence, and their children. They are spirited away in the middle of the night, generally with only the clothes on their backs, to a safe place to sleep, have family meals, learn important skills for employment, have mock interviews to prep them (some have English as a second language), access to clothes, especially business clothes for the interview, and self esteem and self-help courses. A "business-professional" make-over is the icing on the cake. A little can go a very long way for these women. "There, but for the grace of God, go I..." www.marykay.com/CRabel

| Posted about 1 month ago I tend to donate to Defenders of Wildlife, Susan G. Komen (breast cancer). Defenders is an organization that protects wildlife and wild lands. They mostly go after extremes like aerial hunting in Alaska and endangered species. They have a wonderful gift program that is educational and furry. Susan G. Komen, because for two+ years I worked for an incredible woman who had everything she could ever want so I made donations in her honor for her birthday and Christmas because she fought and won the war with breast cancer. I will continue as I can. I plan to do more with volunteering as well. |

| Posted about 1 month ago It's Christmas time and as a Director of our Chamber we try to help out 15 kids in our community with the Dixie County Guardian Ad Litem Program. It is GREAT to know we have at least helped bring a Smile to of the needy families that have a small gift from Santa or someone. We also have a food drive for the needly in our Real Estate Board for the Holidays which we help 30 families to have a nice Holiday meal. I am a sponsor of the American Cancer Society and try to help out as much as possible with the Relay for Life. Being a Cancer survivor and most of my family members passing from Cancer I have a great need to find a cure. I try to have Bar-B-Que fund raisers about 4 times a year to help out and we have yard sales once a month to help with donations as well. We also have cake bakes for the Holidays to help raise money for some of our community Cancer Surviors. Which also brings a big help to us working women for those wonderful home baked pies and cakes. I also am a Humane Society Sponor and try to help weekly with that in any way I can. We also collect old clothing, sheets, blanlets, towels to make more bedding or doggie beds with wood shavings for nice comfortable beds for the dogs. Please donate any old clothing, bedding, collars to your Humane Society or time to just walk some dogs or towels to give them a bath or help out in some way. If you know an animal is being mistreated please report it or at least give it some water and food. I have water and food in my van at all times for helpless strays that can not be caught or hunters stray dogs that get left behind when they get lost in the woods. We also take nice friendly dogs or cats to some of the retirement homes for some comfort to some of the elderly for therapy. They usually will aways find a smile for a four legged friend to pat if they are able. We also make lap blankets for them and try to go once a month to help take them for a walk or try to fix their hair or just stop for 10 - 15 minutes per room to say Hello and ask how they are doing or if they need anything or a letter wrote to someone or new booties or socks. They usually always have cold feet. Any suggestion would be nice to hear to help our small Town community help others in more of a need than ourselves. I have always been told if you help others it will somehow , someday come back to help you in the end. And God will Bless you for helping others in need. I feel that is true for I feel truely blessed to have the love of family and friends that have helped me thru hard times while helping others as well. And I do believe your statement what you do for yourself you're doing for others and what you do for others you're doing for yourself. |

I've been an active advocate for any and all cancer walks and funraisers, my mother-in-law had breast cancer 40 yrs. ago and managed to be C-free after a radical mastectomy, no chemo (God Bless her) and my aunt was diagnosed the beginning of this year and is doing great after just a lumpectomy and chemo. I was a chemo nurse for about 7 yrs. and it was one of the most rewarding positions I have held. I have been active with The Girl Scout Council of Greater St. Louis for about 26 yrs. and just love them. Both of my girls were active, my youngest, now 21, all the way through high school. My other love is the physically and mentally challenged and I have been the track and field coach for Special Olympics here in my home town of Troy for 8 yrs. This town is a huge sponser for these folks and no matter where you go there is something somewhere you can do. I'm a member of the Chamber with a new up and coming Consultant firm being formed and a Senior Consultant for The World-Wide Web in teaching seniors in the senior centers or in their homes how to get on, maneuver and just use the internet to the best of their ability, especially in the ares that would best benefit them. I love getting on here and seeing the many ways in which folks help and I must admit, it gives me a chance to think about a few things that could be looked into around here. Thanks for that. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I hope to be able to raise money for Autism Speaks. My beautiful 6 yr old son Garrett is high-functioning Autistic. I am so lucky to live in an area where the school district offers so many benefits. We also have an Autism walk each year. There is so much information out there yet many parents don't realize there is so much more to an Autistic child then the one who sits in a corner banging his head against a wall. I want people to know a lot of these kids are sweet and loving kids. My son has a great sense of humor and we discovered last night that he likes Jeff Dunham (the ventriliquest-his dummies are Walter, Peanut, Melvin the super hero, etc). There is such a huge spectrum to this disorder and hope that are kids can blend in with the "regular" kids. June Sockol

| Posted about 1 month ago It is hard to compare with so many amazing women like yourselves. I donate to the local humane society which goes to feed and house the animals. I donate to the local Goodwill to help out those who cannot afford to buy new clothes. I donate a lot to my church, which goes to help local needy families. I donate to the local food pantry to help those in need of food. The High School every year takes canned food donations to help those in need for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, which I donate to but this year, the local FFA chapter has "adopted" a family also that we are putting a basket together for Thanksgiving dinner. My daughter and I do anything that has to do with the Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation. This is an amazing organization that has not only helped people in their struggles but through community support has stood beside those that need mental support as well as financial. The "Shop with a Cop" organization is another I take pride in. I also buy new unwrapped toys to donate to local families in need and donate either used, like new or buy new coats for those in need. cindy_leimkuehler@hotmail.com |

| Posted about 1 month ago I am a volunteer (and one of the founders) for Founding Family Charitable Foundation (FFCF). We started in 2005, with the main mission to give grants to middle income public servant families (teachers, clergy, social workers, etc) to help pay the initial costs for adoption. We were blessed by good donations for a couple of years and were able to give several grants, and do other projects for the betterment of children. It was heartwarming to see the sweet families come together. But like other non-profits, contributions have been way down in 2008, and we have depleted our grant funds for now. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I want to add one more thing, that it amazes me that just about everytime i strike up a conversation with someone, they tell me about some project they have that helps someone. Our American volunteer and charitable spirit is amazing! There is no way to track how much good is done. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Thank you all so much for all of your posts - I cannot tell you the joy I have gotten out of reading about just how much generosity is in a woman's heart. I was concerned that, especially in today's frightening economy, people would "pull back"...it looks as if the depth of a woman's giving still remains. I am humbled as I say my "thank-you's" for the angels on Earth He has shared with us. For all of you, and all of the others who haven't yet posted - you are truly the ones who keep me uplifted. We are all connected - all of us - and hopefully sooner rather than later, everyone else will figure it out. www.marykay.com/CRabel

Yes, I do really admire that spirit in Americans. As for me, I pray for God to always give me the grace to reach out to orphans and abandoned children who have no parents to dote on them as I do my children. Jesus reigns |

| Posted about 1 month ago Wow! What an incredible group of ladies!!! Truly warms my heart. I have been a volunteer at our local Sav-A-Life since 1993. I donate to our rescue mission not only for the homeless but for battered women and children as well Susan G. Komen goes without saying I donate to Angel Tree - Prison Fellowship each year (children of inmates receive Christmas gifts) For years I helped with our local Cerebral Palsy Center's Telethon I donate to the March of Dimes I donate to our local children's hospital at Christmas (A program where donors contribute monetary donations which Belk matches and any child admitted after Thanksgiving til the end of the year gets a "Belkie Bear.") There is a group of women in my neighborhood who get together the weekend before Thanksgiving (actually this weekend) and we all purchase 2 large turkeys each and take it to the local soup kitchen (in this town it is the Rescue Mission.) My largest charitable cause is SIDS Foundation/Organization. I donate to them as well as advertise the organization on my web pages, word of mouth, etc. to make others aware of the need for continued research for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
It's so nice to see that so many ladies here who enjoy giving back to the community. I am proud to be in such fine company! | Posted about 1 month ago At Christmas time did you know you can call your local welfare office (sorry, can't remember the actual terminology, but hoping not to offend) and get a name of a family to help out. They will give you their name, address, and all the information on the family living in the household including sizes of shoes and clothing. Last year we "adopted" a family and it was an amazing experience. Me and my kids wrapped all the presents and put to:XXX and all of them were from Santa, snuck to their house Christmas Eve around 9pm and put them on the porch. Everyone got away except my oldest stayed behind to knock then run. When they answered the door, they were totally surprised. We were not close enough to see their expressions but we knew they were not expecting us so it was a huge surprise. To this day, they still do not know who the Santa was. What an amazing feeling and what a lesson to teach your kids, they are still talking about it. cindy_leimkuehler@hotmail.com |

| Posted about 1 month ago At a time when so many people cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel, I wanted to "bump" this up again, as to gain a little more attention to the fact that historically, it is the ones without so many funds, who make the holidays special for those who have even less. Please remember to donate your time, or your skills, or even a bit of money, to YOUR favorite charitable cause. Many are looking to each of us for help. www.marykay.com/CRabel

| Posted about 1 month ago Christine - I'm with you on this one. Here are just a few ideas... McDonald's - has a tree up with ornaments made by children of needy families, take the ornament, buy the gift and return to McDonald's. The ornament is yours to keep! Shop with a Cop - You donate money to this organization and at a set date and time, a "Cop" will take a child shopping for Christmas. Toys for Tots - a new, unwrapped gift (boy or girl) donated by you will go to a child of a needy family this Christmas. There are many more in your local area, you can check the newspaper, call the Police Department or your local welfare office. cindy_leimkuehler@hotmail.com |

| Posted about 1 month ago I found a new one (to me anyway) the other day. Chick Fil A (at least locally here in Macon, GA) has put out their buckets at the drive thru, as well as this wonderful and beautiful light decoration that is unlike any of the other restaurants I've ever seen. It's for Habitat for Humanity, and I've talked to several ladies who also visited in the last week around here, and we all did the same thing. We put every bit of our bills and coins from the change into the bucket. Their reason was pretty much my own. We thought if Chick Fil A was going to go out of their way for this HUGE light assortment, then we were impressed and wanted to help them out with it. So, that's another one I've found around here anyway. (Note: I've always thought Habitat for Humanity was an important organization. This just happened to be a little different in the way it was presented so I thought I'd mention it here.) HUGS! What an interesting and friendly place to be. I hope that I get the chance to "talk" to a few of you as I seem to have adapted the ways of my shift at the last job I had. It also doesn't help that my huubby works nights. :) In staying with the topic, I have to say that volunteering is one of my absolute favorite pastimes. I've been off of work for about a year as one of the screws from a back surgery I had in '04 has broken and I'm on disibility until I can get it fixed or replaced or whatever!
