Posted 9 months ago I don't work from home every day - mostly because I am afraid of my home computer giving me trouble, or my network connection losing connectivity. What's the best type of computer to get for work at home? Do you prefer to keep in touch with co-workers via phone, or computer? |

| Posted 9 months ago Get a computer that you aren't going to put all of your personal files on. The best type would probably be a laptop because you can move about your house or even go down to Starbucks and work over a latte. I'm turning into a huge Mac fan so I would suggest a MacBook, they last forever and the Mac OS isn't as vulnerable in terms of viruses and trojans as a PC. If you want to stick with the Windows OS, I suggest a Sony Vaio..they are kind of pricey but worth it. Also I suggest HP. I have an HP Pavilion Entertainment laptop with a 17" screen and built in 10-key. It is pretty large and bulky and I wouldn't recommend it for just strictly business stuff. But as for photo, video, and music editing, it gets the job done well. |

| Posted 9 months ago Do not get a DELL.... I do not like my Dell. I do like the HP Pavillion that Jeepgirl89 mentioned but after only a few months the number keys won't work. I like the 17" screen.... |

| Posted 9 months ago The number keys work fine, it's my fault that I spilled a little cranberry juice on the keyboard. But I fixed it without sending it in. :-) |

| Posted 9 months ago I agree with momof2 - don't purchase a Dell. I purchased a Dell laptop March 2007 and had to have a new one sent within 30 days. I suspect it was the new Windows Vista. Now that I've had it for almost a year now, I'm not 100% happy with a machine that I paid a pretty good penny for... It shut downs on its on and I guess I don't have enough memory. Sometimes I can't run multiple windows of IE and Word at the same time. I would say buy it from Best Buy or some place that you can take the machine in for repair. Staying on the phone with tech support for hours is not cool. |

| Posted 9 months ago My HP is from Costco, comes with a 1 year warranty but you can buy extended warranty from HP for pretty low prices. I think the problem with Dell was that their configuration wasn't right to handle Vista. I haven't had any problems with Vista on my machine other than the fact that I just don't like it :-) |

| Posted 7 months ago Too bad about Dell, used to be good computers. The computer depends upon what you want to do. Technology is still changing, I own 4 computers and need two new ones. I need one to scan PDF files and that is going to take a much larger brain than what I have now. I also need one to run my entertainment center and house remotes soooooooooo I need new technology for that too. Dont pay too much for anything you purchase. I love MAC but expensive. Reliable and absoultely a must if you want to do programming, catalog work, graphic design etc. And then it depends upon what operating system you need to run your software. If you can use something basic and simple, I say go to Sams Club and try to purchase whatever model they have on close out sale. And get an LCD monitor as big as you can afford. You can watch movies on your computer now and a wonderful monitor makes it great. I am not a laptop person. Have had two, hated them even with a docking station. My last laptop, I ran through my tower set up LOL. Margo |

| Posted 7 months ago I did a lot of research in this area and talked to a lot of different knowledgable people. As far as laptops, they said HP, Sony, and Dell were not good. They said the Toshiba is the number one laptop. I recently purchased one and have not had any problems. The Toshiba replaced my HP laptop I had because the HP was nothing but trouble. My daughter also had an HP and nothing but trouble with hers. My other daughter bought a Toshiba about 6 mo. ago and she loves it. For desktops, they say Dell is number one with Acer as number two. I currently have an E-Machine desktop that I bought 2 years ago and have had no problems with. A lot of the computers that are pricey have features you don't need for a business so keep that in mind too. Hope this info helps.

| Posted 6 months ago I love working from home, but my DELL computer is not exactly an easy task to deal with. I've had this particular computer about 4 years and have had to replace TWO hard drives already. We have a huge external back up drive because of this. This computer gives me more error messages than any other Gateway or HP product I've owned. We won't purchase another Dell. Lisa Russell

| Posted 6 months ago I can't say enough good things about my experience with Mac laptops over the past five years. My Powerbook G4 served me so well for over four years, and I recently just upgraded to a MacBook (G5). It's great for everything I use it for—word processing, Internet, some photo and music editing and archiving, etc. Plus the design is fabuuuulous. Daniela

| Posted 4 months ago I personally have a Toshiba laptop with Windows Vista and I love it! I bought the warranty from Circuit City just in case but I haven't had any problems so far. Except that Vista doesn't do well with IE so I use Firefox as my browser. I have had the laptop for about a year now and I have no complaints. |

| Posted 4 months ago My Dell laptop died in two years. Later, I found out that Dell had recalled the model and never notified me. Their customer service is the worst. After writing them several times, Dell refused to do anything. Now I have an Acer, which I like.
You can add an external backup to a laptop so you save your daily work to a disc. |

| Posted 4 months ago wow, I'm really surprised at the reviews of Dell. I had two Dells, the first about 8 years ago, and the second 6 years ago. I only had to get rid of the first one because my husband got a really aggressive trojan introduced into it by going onto some serious porn sites when I was out. I simply couldn't use it anymore, and replaced it with another, which lasted me beautifully. I sold it when I came back to the UK, still working like a dream. It was powerful and did all I needed it to do, and I never needed customer service because neither one ever gave me a problem. Microsoft software isn't much good, so I uninstalled what came with the computer and installed some of my own. "Microsoft works" became the greatest oxymoron of all time after 2003. Microsoft Office was so limiting! I couldn't do most of the things that I had always done before, as the applications had been removed to be purchased separately. But the Dell was a fabulous bargain for the money. |

| Posted 4 months ago I want to get a laptop soon so that I can take my writing to the beach on good days, and I've already selected one that I think I'll like. Which one do you have? |

| Posted 4 months ago So.... shortly after singing the praises of my Toshiba laptop the hard drive went out! And right after my one year manufacturer warranty expired, thank goodness I bought the two year protection plan from the store as well. I received a new hard drive at no additioal cost, however I no longer have any of my personal files, pictures, music, etc. Maybe Toshiba's not that great.... |
