Posted 2 months ago My son will be 3 in Dec. and I have been potty training for 7 months and its not that he is not ready he just chooses when we wants to tell me or gives me a hard time when I sit him on the potty. While in the meantime he uses the potty with minimal trouble at daycare or at home whenever he messes his pull-up he just takes it off. Especially at night he throws his wet pull-up to the side and in morning I'm washing his pee soaked sheets. I need to call in reinforcements... any suggestions????? |

| Posted 2 months ago First, boys are stubborn little buggers. Have you asked the daycare what they do so you can copy it at home? When we were going to potty train my son, we did it over the Christmas break from preschool. I didn't use pull-ups because they never worked. My son peed in those til they were about to overflow and wouldn't tell me. I made a point not to make any plans when we started, if you are running out, chances are you will put on a pull-up because you don't want an accident when you are out. This disrupts the training. When we first tried the training, I put on the pull-up when he was going to nap. Well, he started to hold it because he knew he could pee in the pull-up. He actually held it in for over 6 hours one day. The second time around, on the first day, as soon as he was up in the morning, I put him in big boy underwear. Usually they won't like the pee going down their legs. Just like training a dog, you put him on the potty as soon as he gets up, after he eats or drinks. Otherwise we did it about every hour. If one drop hits the toilet we made a big deal and he got to have a special treat - 5 m&m's. He could only have the treat if he used the toilet. On the 4th day, he finally realized it was a good thing to use the toilet. At night we used the pull-up because it was harder to wake up from a deep sleep. I made sure he didn't eat or drink very much about 2 hours before bedtime. It took about 4 months before he would do #2 in the toilet. It took almost a year before he stayed dry at night. My son never liked the potty seats from the store. We bought a special seat that fits right on the toilet and a step stool to stand on. He liked that much better. What does your son really like? You could make a sticker chart and after so many stickers he gets a special prize. You could pick up a couple of toys at the dollar store, or maybe he gets to watch an extra 30 minutes of tv or play a special video game. Never get mad if he won't use the toilet and don't punish. Praise like crazy when he does use it . Also, don't get mad if the sheets are wet, don't make a big deal about it. As a mom I know it's frustrating but just change the sheets and go on with your day. If you have been doing it for 7 months, maybe take a break for a month. Try again when you are going to be home for a few days. Just be patient it does happen. I hope this helps you out. June Sockol
