Just started this group and wanted to start a positive thread on why you have decided to support Barack Obama for president this upcoming Nov. 4.

I could probably spend days telling you the many reasons why I personally am voting for Obama, but I'll stick to the basics:

  • An end to our involvement in Iraq

  • A better standing among our allies and enemies

  • Preserving a woman's right to choose

  • Reinforcing equal rights for all (LGBT, etc.)

  • I believe in his economic policies

  • Comprehensive immigration reform

  • I believe in the transparency of his campaign and how that would translate in his administration

  • A sound, progressive, and smart approach to the many environmental issues our country and world now faces

  • I believe he would greatly improve the public education system

And before I steal anyone else's thunder, I'll just stop there and wait to see what you all can add to the list.

Go Barack! I was  Hillary suppoter, I must confess, but once she was out (and I still like her) he's the man. I am reading Audacity of Hope, and it is obvious how smart and aticulate he is. He has good ideas, acts on them and I htink whatever amount of experience he already has in the Senate and from life will serve him well. And he will surely surround himself with smart, capable! people, unlike McPain as they are now know.

Agree with Daniela about Women's rights, LGBT, Abortion, Education (sorely needed). Enough said. I will be doing some phone calling through Move On's organizing and encourage others to do same, we need to reach into other states like Nevada, NM etc.

I was not really swayed 100% for Obama knowing that politicians are full of lies for what they think they want the public to hear. The two highest persuading factors for me were:

  1. Views on science policies.

  2. Great educational system ideas.

Aftter that, there are a few other reasons:

  1. Economic policy seems to go closer with my own than McCain's does.

  2. The right to choose for an abortion.

  3. He seems like he isn't lying nearly as often as most politicians do.

I'm still young and jaded. I don't really have much belief in the way that the political system is run now, but I believe in what this country was founded on. I've not missed an election since turning 18, but I've not always voted for only one party. I'm pretty split between the two, it is more of which is a better candidate.

It is in our shared best interests to vote for Obama

Obama sees the needs of the people and the environmental and economic systems in which we live and will respond as he has done in the past to assure that a broad set of needs are met; his senate voting record proves this.

He will bring a spirit of collaboration and strength of character back into the foreign policy which has become an embarrassing and dangerous posturing of fear and unconscionable behavior.

He will assure that our policies also reflect respect and support for women and children and families.

I also agree with womens right to choose, economics, and mostly to end the war in Iraq. I understand the soldiers will just be sent to Afganistan instead, but at least it's for a reason. I honestly believe we have no business in Iraq, and am grateful for a candidate who shares that point of view. Also, I like his beliefs on the immigration system.

Obama is a worthy, caring, and very smart man who, to me, represents needed change in our nation. I believe that he has all of America in his best interest and he will do great deeds for our country that should have been done long ago. Like bringing our troops home from Iraq who should have never been there in the first place. Even my 17 year old daughter is a gung-ho fan of Obama's and wishes she were 18 so she could vote in this election. She makes a worthy opponent for any McCain supporter because she can debate Obama's views versus McCain's and makes great points for Obama! Go Obama!

Obama is more in touch with realities of human challanges.

He is bring the most important element in life "peace".

He is humble through his own life and experiences.

He is bringing economic policies that favor most Americans.

He is about hard work not greed.

He knows how hard it is to be raised by a single mother.

He also knows how strong and dynamic women are.

Nor matter how rich we are or poor the natural disasters are working against our wisdom we need each other as humans and Obama is about that.

Because for the first time since JFK was president (whoops, just revealed that I'm an oldie but a goodie ), I feel hopeful.  Barack Obama inspires me so much that for the first time in my entire life, I made a donation to a political candidate; that's how much hope Barack Obama's given me.  I really think that if anyone can change this country, it's Barack Obama.

Being Americna Indian, I feel a good spirit about this fellow, whether or not, his experience in politics is enough to get started, along with the help of all those insidethe white house, that house, and that house, I say he has alot of help to make the right decisions and fairly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also would have voted for Hilary but unfortunately she was edged out.  Why am I voting for Obama?  Womens rights, education issues, desparately need a democrat in the White House, and I believe that what we all need most in our government and our lives is change and hope for what the American Ideal stands for all not just a few.  Candy

I am voting for Obama because Cowboys and Mavericks think of us as uneducated, railroaded Yahoos.  We need a thinking, caring president who respects the individual and works for the global good.

I think women are more practical when it comes to politics --I am also leary of politicians - in general.  The first thing that caught my eye about Obama? -- his choice to work within his community, as an organizer, instead of collecting a six-figure income.  I have to believe he really does understand the struggles that people go through after all of the work he has done in that arena - it also shows me that he does care.  The other thing that interests me specifically about Obama is his insistence that we all buy-in - that it does in fact "take a village" (what a concept) - and I hear in his words an expectation that we all must take responsibility: in our families, within our communities and as Americans.  I think he truly believes (as do I) that together, we can make an impact, improve our future - leave a better legacy.

I have always prided myself on being an Independent - but lately I've been forced to hold down the "other side" - in defense of what I hold dear; so, in no particular order, I will echo what I've already read posted here:

  • Preserving a woman's right to choose; I've also heard Obama say we need to put alternatives in place to support families when a pregancy is at risk -- my own personal belief - let's elimate the need for any woman having to make this choice

  • Healthcare for our children, single-parent families, and senior citizens (specifically)

  • As a nation, I believe we've always had a healthier economy under a democratic administration - their approach is more in line with my personal approach to business

  • I believe in quality education for everyone -- public education - not a movement to subsidize private schools

  • "A sound, progressive, and smart approach to the many environmental issues our country and world now faces" -AMEN

  • I believe he's shown a great capacity to bring diversity together - I think he's shown great vision and judgment - I think he will actually encourage and expect bipartisan partnerships to heal this country - I witness his excutive leadership every day of his campaign.

I agree with everything here. I must say that above all, he has the ABILITY TO INVOLVE PEOPLE AT EVERY LEVEL. I specifically agree with dcaissie, that he is very like JFK in that he has gotten many people across many demographics to want to be a part of the political process. I think many Americans, especially the younger crowd, may disagree with current policies and trends - but do nothing because they feel disheartened, disenfranchised and therefore, disinterested.

Obama may not even be able to bring about the change he offers, or do it as quickly as we would like; but HE OFFERS HOPE and NEWNESS that if Americans embrace, would SET THE STAGE for REAL CHANGE.

He IS a community organizer and that is a HUGE STRENGTH!! He can get people behind a movement in the right general direction and start the ball rolling to get us back to the Country we want to be.

He ENCOURAGES PEOPLE to make things happen. Grassroots movements are extremely powerful and we stand to change things FROM THE GROUND UP since it hasn't been working so well lately from the TOP DOWN.

He really makes me believe that I can do something to make my country better. That is what it will take for us to improve, being involved.  Thank you for bringing back a sense of community, Obama!

What about a national healthcare for all adults single, married, or just living together without children?

I am a US citizen, use to be considered middle class, now I'm working poor. Try to get help through hard times, can't get Medical, housing assistance (Sect. 8), or food stamps. When I'm working I make to much. I live in CA where rentals are at outrages prices. It takes 3/4, if not all of ones monthly income. I'm lucky to be living in a rent controlled apt. building, otherwise I'd be homeless. Unemployment does not cover all my living expenses. When I'm working, there is not much left over for savings, fun stuff, and health insurance let alone going to a doctor or getting medicine. My recourse because I can't get Medicare even on unemployment, is to go to the free or by donation clinics. If I wasn't a US Citizen, I could get all the help I want! Where is the justice?

My hopes are a fresh outlook! That he won't cave into the established we can't do this! He will not only address the problems, but do something about it! I know he has a big job of cleaning up the mess the previous administration has made. Will the white people be included with the other cultural groups with assistance in healthcare, housing, and education? Not all white people are rich! I haven't even addressed the economy! That is another concern. Jobs are pretty scarce here in CA!

Ok I'm done ranting and raving on my soap box for now. If he can get a healthcare program going for every US CITIZEN, he's got my vote.

I think Obama is our hope for the change, our economy couldn't be any worst or maybe if we keep a Republican as a president. We need to think in our children future so we should make the diference.

Starlight -you make a great point on the healthcare -- I was focused on groups I believe have been screwed with for so long - but you're right - it has started to affect everyone - I am so sorry to hear of your worries - there's been a huge battle - on-going - between insurance companies and other health related industries to keep this country from forming some sort of protection for its citizens - we need healthcare reform - period.

As an aside - I recently saw a full page ad from the AMA - they have a website you might want to check out - its: www.voicefortheuninsured.org

There are dozens of reasons, many of them social. But even if you don't share my lefty ideaology, the economic events of the last week illustrate what a disaster the Republican's laissez-faire, free-market approach has wrought. I'm all for capitalism, but the pendulum has swung so far in the direction of hands-off government that we are hovering at the edge of the economic abyss. Of course, now the government is suddenly stepping in to try to save the day with a huge cash infusion that will put all of us taxpayers at risk. And sadly, they have no choice. This is what eight years of Bush has bought us. And McCain's economic policy is cut from the same cloth. We can't afford four more years of this.

Thank you McKaren. I will go to that web site.  Lately healthcare has been an issue with my family and friends.  They either got laid off or unemployed.

Getting back to topic our economy needs a shot in the arm.  Until we can get living expenses under control, no one can do extra things like Traveling, shopping, going to the movies, etc.

I agree that, not only things need to be taken care of here at home, also on the international front. Previous administration really made a mess of that!

I feel with a clear head and knowing what it's like to have to make ends meet. That he won't lose sight that this country is made up of hard working people that have to watch every dollar they spend.

I'm glad he is pro choice. We need someone who is also sensitive to women's issues. I was on the fence, now it's go Obama!!

I agree with the previous posts...."it's the economy stupid!" When Bush took over from Clinton, this country had a surplus...now, the only people who will NOT feel the effects of giving the oil companies, Halliburton, and other special interests...are the people who are those special interests.

Do I think Obama is more ethical than previous candidates? Not necessarily, but I do believe that he isn't out to gouge the majority of people in this country in order to benefit a few right wingers and their cronies...

My fear is that another 4 years of the same economic policies will lead us to one of two futures, neither of which is pleasant to contemplate:

The first is this: the people of this country do NOT revolt and our children are in economic slavery to those people who have beneffited from the decisions now being made

The second is this: the people of this country DO revolt as more and more of us are unable to house our families, provide food and medical care for our children and elderly parents, and our 40 hour workweek turns into 50, 60, or more just in an effort to not lose those precious jobs that are held by...you guessed it! The right wing conservatives.

I know this sounds awful, but this will be my first time voting!  Although I was behind Bill Clinton, I missed my opportunity to vote on that day and since then there has not been a candidate worth voting for.  I believe Barack is speaking from his heart and believes he is the voice of the people, but he too is only a man.  When he is elected, as women we will need to continue to pray that he stays committed to all the promises he is making during his campaign.  Right now, the economy is at its worse and it is going to take some hard core solutions to turn things around.  But, I truly believe that if anyone can make it work it would be Barack.  He will utilize all resources of minds to take true action creating systems that truly work to the betterment of all people and not just the elite few.

Good evening all!  I am a strong supporter of and a volunteer for Sen. Obama first and foremost because he is the most intelligent candidate.

You don't graduate from Harvard Law and be both editor and president of the Harvard Law Review by being a mediocre student.  Also, he taught constitutional law. And in these very dangerous days when our most precious Constitution has been trampled upon unmercifully; ie the writ of habeas corpus being eliminated by the Military Commissions Act;  we  need a president who understands and will defend the Constitution of the United States.  This is the oath of office that the president takes: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."  (Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution).

A president does not swear to defend the oil companies; does not swear to protect and preserve anything or anyone else, just to protect the Constitution of the United States. For without our Constitution, we simply have no country.

I also support Obama because of his vision, his judgement, his commitment, and his natural ability to lead. I define his leadership ability by the very essence of what makes a true leader;  and that is inspiration.  A true leader does not ask people to follow him or her;  a true leader inspires others to follow.

His addition of Sen. Biden to be VP is based  upon Sen. Biden's experience: ie; Chairman of the Judiciary Committee (Biden Crime Bill of 1994 which added 100.000 additional police officers and helped states with combating crime; authored the  Violence Against Women Act in 2000,  additional law initiatives which created a nationwide system for tracking and registering sex offenders including the Adam Walsh Act..

Also, Biden's service as the Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations including his recent trip to Georgia.

I could go on and on but I believe you get the picture.  In short : intelligence, judgement, foresight, temperment, integrity, inspiration.

If we cannot elect Obama and Biden to the White House, then the alternative of McSame and PalesByComparison leading this country is too horrible to consider.

Hello everyone.  There are so many reasons I'm voting for Obama and many have been already mentioned.  Basically, most of his beliefs and values coincide with mine.

I believe McCain and Palin would like to turn our Democracy into a theocracy.  If you haven't seen the video from Palin's church, you need to take a look.  Reminded me of Jim Jones and Jonestown.  Now, let me explain a little of my theory of religion.  Whatever you believe, whatever gives you comfort and hope, more power to you as long as you don't try to impoe your religious beliefs on me.  I strongly believe that McCain and Palin would try to impose their religious beliefs on everyone in this country.  There is a historical reason the Founding Fathers in their wisdom included the separation of Church and State doctrine in the Constitution.  Like many areas of the Constitution, the current Administration and, I believe, McCain and Palin, would ground this most basic and precious protection into the ground.

As reported on The Natin website, the McCain camp has sent a contingent to Alaska to interfere in the investigation of Palin's dismissal of a top state official because he refused to fire her ex-brother-in-law.  Sound familiar?  We need a president who will not interfere with investigations into wrong doing as Bush and Cheney have done and as McCain appears to be doing.  I believe that Obama would let investigations proceed to their natural conclusion no matter what the consequence.  I also believe that Obama would not mis-use the "executive privilege" claim which has become a normal Bush Administration practice.

Obama offers concrete ideas and plans.  McCain (and his surrogates for that matter) offers nothing more than canned phrases and sound bites.  For an excellent example, take a look at the speeches and question and answer periods given to AARP by both McCain and Obama.  The differences are staggering.

McCain refuses to acknowledge mistakes or when he's wrong.  When confronted with the fact that the majority of major media, including news outlets that supported him without question in the past, have determined that he has blatantly lied about facts about Obama's record, McCain's response was "see our my website, everything is true."  This is the same attitude that has gotten us into the God awful mess that is Iraq.

I am also highly insulted that the McCain campaign thinks women who supported Hilary or are undecided will vote for McCain because he has put a woman on his ticket.  Does he really believe that women will vote for a candidate only because she's female despite who beliefs and positions on the issues?  Just how stupid does McCain think women are?

Being from Chicago, I am wary of anyone who is connected to the Chicago Democratic machine.  Obama may not wish to admit it, however, he calls one of the leaders of that machine his political godfather.  Even considering that connection, I believe Obama will be more open and honest that what we've got now or what McCain/Palin could offer on their best days.

I know this thread is about why we're voting for Obama but I'd like to address something posted above about Obama keeping his campaign promises.  What we need to realize is that if the Senators and Congress people voted into office are opposed to the ideas that Obama supports and puts forward, those programs will fail.  We must not only elect Obama to the presidency but we must elect Congress people to office who support his programs and will see that they are put into effect.

I will be honest I am not crazy about either one of them.  Since reading your posts and Obama's stand for abortion I would have to say my vote will go for McCain.  You all mention the women's right to choose what about the babys right to choose.  You need to read why the woman who orginally brought to the Supreme court to make a decision about Roe vs Wade is now against abortion.

This is such an important point - we have a history as Americans for balancing the Presidency (democrat or republican) with an opposing party in the House and Senate -  today more than ever - it's so important everyone get on the same page - there's lots of work to be done.

The reason why I am voting for Obama is pure and simple, it's time for a change. We've seen what the republicans can do now it's time for us to see what the the Democrats. I think that once Obama is elected president he will clean up this mess and get our country back in shape.

I'm for Obama because he represents the best avenue we have for change in this election.  He's young, he's virbrant and he is in touch with the working force of America.  He fights for the under dog and brings their plight to the forefront.  I like his policies and I love his character.  No matter who gets in will have their work cut out for them but I believe that Obama's commitment to the American people will help him to maintain; he will bring back dignity to the American people and America as a nation.

All I need to know about his plans are clearly outlined on his website, and I can say I agree with nearly 100% of it, which doesn't compare to McCain. I like the fact that he is young. I feel that he brings a new perspective to old politics. For the first time, I feel that the parties (Demo/Repub) shouldn't and don't have anything to do with the reasoning for voting for a president. Obama doesn't let his party put him a certain category, he doesn't let it define him as a candidate, and I don't think he will when he's president either.
