Hi all,

I recently gave birth to my first child and decided that this would be a great time to go back to school for a second bachelor degree (B.S Education and BBA Managerial Sciences) and now feel like I have two degrees and no career. It seems that my previous experience, Aquatics director at a local Y, doesn't transfer into 'management experience' and the break to go back to school doesn't look great on my resume. I'm willing to start at entry level but would like to feel like the job has the potential to lead into a career.

Any suggestions as to how to change careers and get back in the workforce?

Just some thoughts:

  • I would jot down some of the "work" I'd like to get involved in -- you know, "my dream job would be ..."

  • think about your strengths and (kind of corny but I'm a true believer) your passions.

  • Also, perhaps take advantage of career counseling that includes an analysis of your personality and thought processes towards work.

  • Finally, if I were starting out today -- I'd take a hard look at the "internet" and try to match my talents with some position in that industry -- it seems to me: a good portion of the planet's population (and increasing every day) with access to the internet -- 7 days a week, 24/7 -- this is a market I'd love to tap into.

It could be your resume is not accurately portraying you. I think it is easier to look at other people's resumes than our own.  Your resume should try and use some of the same words you see in the job ad you are applying for. Does that make sense?
