What does "diversity in the workplace" mean?

Posted 7 months ago As a non-US, asian, woman, I have three counts towards diversity and have heard across the schools and the organizations I have been a part of how much they "value diversity". I have seen some good examples and some pretty crappy lip service. What does diversity in the workplace mean to you and how do you recognize it? |

| Posted 7 months ago I think diversity of perspective/ideas is the most valuable form of diversity. Regardless of difference in the way people look, if they're all from the same fundamental background (educational, class, geographic, etc.) then there is probably a diversity of thought that is lacking that would be valuable. |

| Posted 7 months ago I agree with distantwizard, diversity in the workplace is generally about ideas and different perspectives. On paper though it looks more diverse to have different ages, races, and genders. So which one is more helpful to a business: what is going on in the heads of the workers, or what they look like on paper? |

| Posted 7 months ago Diversity means a culture of inclusiveness. People of different backgrounds possess various perspectives that can benefit a multicultural community. Our company has several diversity groups and a diversity council for everyone to come together and explore the outside the box issues facing the world around us. Diversity is not something to be taken lightly. Overall, the reality is to create a competitive workforce one has to be able to understand and communicate with someone who doesn’t often look or think like them. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Diversity in the workplace to me means understanding and respecting the difference of the people around you based on their beliefs, understandings and thoughts about work. The definition of diversity reads: di·ver·si·ty –noun, plural -ties.
I think that we have all become tied up in believing that the word diversity relates only to our obvious differences, i.e, race, age , gender. We are all mulit-facted and should take time to embrace that both while at work and at play! Need Breeds Ingenuity! |

| Posted about 1 month ago Corperate diversity is also important to reflect the population your company or business serves: customers, clients, etc. Diversity (culture, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, etc) brings a variety of ideas and perspectives, but also increases a client/customer/investor/etc's perception that the company can effectively engage, understand, and communicate to a 'diverse' audience. Sometimes it may be lipservice- but our experiences are varied and unique, an array of experiences makes resources richer. From a student affairs and service-non-profit perspective: students & clients like to see people who look like them. I've been told by students and clients that they feel someone of the same culture, or even a similar culture, can speak to them "where they are at". I choose a female doctor for that reason- wanted someone who knew what it was like to have the same parts! Korina Anja |
