I am in need of  a nanny and I have the option of getting one from a nanny agency or a known source of mine. Which one do you think would be a better option. What are the benefits of using an agency?

For your own peace of mind, if you can afford an independent background check, I would do so. The problem with agencies is they are in the business of making money. Kids are our most precious assets. Not only do you need a good match for your lifestyle, but someone who is honest, reputable, competent, and loves your kids.

I cannot tell you which a better source is: An agency or a referral from a friend, but listen to your gut feelings. Prepare a list of questions for each interview. If you have any qualms about an applicant, pass.

I agree 100% with Stgreg11.

The price you pay on an independent background will be well worth it in the end. My suggestion when doing the background is to make sure it is a national background. It's a bit more expensive however you will know whether the person has any record within any state. Most backgrounds only pull from the state you are in.

At the end of the day I would speak to everyone you know - in your neighborhood, your local elementary schools, parents, etc. The best childcare I've had for my daughter has been through people in the community. As Stgreg11 said, after that you just have to trust your gut.

It's not who you are that holds you back. It's who you think you're not. - Unknown
