I have always wanted to write articles for magazines and someday a book.  I have a wealth of knowledge that I can share on all different types of brain disorders and in the healthcare area.   I would also like to find a job editing/proofing others work.  This is a dream I have always had and just recently had a poem published in a book that is to come out soon.  Don't know if the company is legitimate or not.

I would like to get some good advice and tips for pursuing this interest.  Is this something I can make a decent living doing?

Many thanks and have a wonderful week.

Hi, Merlin,

Do you have any credible resources about Alzheimer’s?

You can contact newspapers to ask them if they will let you publish articles.  They will ask for samples of your articles.  You can also contact publishers and ask for a meeting with the editor.  See if you can get someone interested in accepting a manuscript before you send one.  You can also ask these same people if they're hiring copy editors and proofreaders, if you can do any of that.  Use as many of your skills as possible, so that you can have a steadier income.  Writing doesn't pay a lot at first, but it is fulfilling work.  One way that you could supplement it is to contact local universities and colleges about giving lectures.  It's usually up to the professors to hire speakers and pay them.  Since writing books of any kind takes time, the lectures could help you to begin making money.  If you need any help with the writing, let me know.  I do that kind of stuff, and would be more than happy to help.

Perseverence!!! Don't give up.  Richard Marx was turned down by every record company in New York and California, but he kept at it.  He has a great song called "Don't Mean Nothing", look up the words or get the song.  He wrote it as a slam back at what he went through.

I would suggest you get some of the help books to explain how to do querys.  Also magazines like "The Writer" or "Writers Digest" always have helpful sections.  Go to either Borders or Barnes and Noble and go to their writer's section.  There are so many books out there I wouldn't even know where to begin to recommend.  I own a copy of "Writer's Guidelines" for magazines.  I also own "Writer's Market" and a number of other books that help.  You decide what will help you the most.  That's what's great about those 2 bookstores, you can flip through the books/magazines to see if it's what you need before you spend the money.  (Most libraries carry some of these books too)

Another thing is make sure you are querying the correct market and make sure your query and/or article is perfect.  Editors will see an error and you are thrown out pretty quick.  They figure if you can't speak or spell correctly in a simple letter then how are you going to write for them?

Hope this helps.

Literary magazines are a way to begin to get published and recognized for writing. If you keep submitting to 30+, you are bound to eventually have work chosen, and yes they pay you...and No, its not much in the beginning. Same goes for newspapers. Pay grows with your growing portfolio of published works.
