Embracing Change to Have the Career You Want
Thinking of making a big change? TM's been there, too.

Changing careers, going back to work, and going back to school is a wonderful life-place to be in. Yet it can be so scary leaving what we know and are familiar with. This place is often called your “comfort zone.” Strange, isn’t it, to use the term “comfort zone” when being there can cause us to experience so much discomfort doing those things that cause stress and even illness?
I know change. Let me tell you my story.
I felt the tug and pull of wanting to move on to something new during my tenure in marketing and administrative positions. The tug to stay put is strong. “Don’t rock the boat,” I was told by family and friends who were only trying to think what was best for me. Getting a regular paycheck and maybe some benefits is seductive. And to be pulled toward something new is also seductive with its own series of concerns and doubts.
I was the Director of Marketing & Administration for a medium-sized company as the millennium approached. There were good points like getting a regular salary. There were some negative points like working for someone who was overbearing to say the least. This was not the first time I worked for a high-powered individual terrorizing those who worked for him. Through my ongoing development, I was seeking answers to my inquiry of “there must be another way.” I became more knowledgeable regarding the power of thoughts and what we attract. I kept attracting difficult men. All this as I was also undergoing radiation and chemotherapy for breast cancer. I scheduled treatments surreptitiously to avoid letting anyone at work know. (There were other circumstances weaved in-between – this is the abridged version.)
What helped me through all this was my coach, Myrna. I was also doing some volunteer coaching outside of work. Several months after my cancer treatments, Myrna told me about how I could become a coach myself through certification programs. I wasted no time researching them. I enrolled in the Coaches Training Institute, which is recognized by the International Coaching Federation. The program dates and logistics worked smoothly with my work schedule and taking the certification program. It took me about a year and a half. I was certified in November 2000.
Following certification I enrolled in the year-long Co-Active Leadership program, which fosters “leadership potential and skills through the development of an international community of peers and leaders.” By continuing to work, I was able to afford the certification and leadership courses, and save money for when I would be developing a full-time coaching business. A plus was that I coached several of the staff in my office, who moved forward by enrolling in higher education doing what they loved and earning more money. The company was going through downsizing at the time, so this was perfect timing for those I coached.
I developed a part-time coaching practice while working full-time. In mid-2003 I became part of the downsizing. As much as I was looking forward to building my coaching business full-time, it was still scary that unforeseen circumstances took some of the focus away from my career. Despite this, I was on my way to doing what I love. I believe that even in the face of road-blocks, when we become self-aware of what we are attracting, our talents and purpose, anything is possible! It is a courageous act to dig deeper down the self-awareness rabbit hole.

I think, its about time that I need to change my career.
If you believe me, its a li'l scary!
I've been into HR recruitment for about 2 years now........ (to be honest, I was pushed into this! )
Now I'm looking forward to go back to my writing career . I'm pretty good at online research and marketing too but not really sure if employers would prefer me for these positions now. My current company is almost near to wind up..........I have a family to take care of - I'm very much worried.
I don't know where i'm gonna land up next!
Pray for me dears.... thanks in Advance................ Salma

LadyDi - Even champions/leaders struggle to get to where they want to be. Regardless of political preferences, the way the candidates conducted themselves during the process of getting nominated was the best I have witnessed. They took on the challenges. Even if they didn’t win, they went for what they believed in. What takes struggle out of the equation is to switch from seeing obstacles as struggles to challenges. You have three degrees. You choose to get the degrees and do whatever it takes to achieve getting them. You are a winner as far as I am concerned. You are in a small percentage of people to have made such an achievement. What is your intention in getting off the track of struggle to one to get you on track to where you want to be? And yes, it will have its challenges. Whatever you choose, choose because it is what you want to do, to be, and to have, otherwise it will be an uphill struggle. Anything is possible and you are the possibility of being the winner at your game.

Hi,
After significant road blocks and acheiving three degrees, two of which are in the education field; I am still struggling financially and left feeling fustrated as a result. I have always loved working with children and making a difference in their lives, however I did not get through the struggle to struggle!
Any suggestions?

If you are thinking about owning your own business or you are a small business owner, you may want to take advantage of these online tutorials for small businesses. The courses are all self-paced and each takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Most of the courses require a brief online registration. Topics include planning, management, finance and accounting, marketing and advertising, government contracting, risk management and cyber security, e- commerce, international trade, federal tax training, and retirement. You can access this site from the U.S. Small Business Administration website - http://www.sba.gov/services/training/onlinecourses/

Jenn, I don't know what field you are trying to get into but perhaps there is another question you can ask yourself. What could be a reason why you have not been hired - in the big picture. Perhaps it is meant for you to start your own business or find a partner to go in jointly with you on it? Also, I would suggest, if you aren't already, get involved with some meetup groups or events that have something to do with your industry to at least meet some people and become recognizable in the industry. You still won't have experience but you will be rubbing elbows with people who can put in a good word for you perhaps. Networking can work well if you use it right.

Possibility Coach - I am not being a "victim", and my days are not "cloudy". I am simply explaining my situation, letting others know that education isn't always enough, and asking if anyone has any real advise for me.
I am positive about my future, and I know the right job is out there for me. Maybe I am getting impatient. I feel I have been ready for this change for quite some time.

Your article is very encouraging. In 2005, I decided to quit my job because I was unhappy. I moved to another city with no job but a definite desire to succeed. Well it took a year for me to find a new engineering position I was better suited for. Many doors were slammed in my face and many people who I thought were my friends turned their back on me. My biggest challenge was that I had a Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering with no experience in the field.
Here are some tips to those who are discouraged because it seems like no one will give them a chance:
•Create a Core Competencies based resume this will enable you to highlight your transferable skills that are applicable to the career you are trying to break in to.
•If you are unable to hire a personal coach check your city’s local workforce/career center most offer free resume critiquing, interviewing workshops and career advice
I learned a lot during my year of uncertainly I prayed a lot, read many encouraging books and did have a few people in my corner to uplift me. Now I am taking on the challenge of building my writing career. Things are starting to pick up for me considerably but I have had to be very patient and resilient in the face of rejection. Please don’t give up I am living proof that things can turn around. Keep your head up there is a silver lining amongst those clouds.

When we are so entangled with dire events we can’t see the light. It is like a cloudy, rainy day, we forget that the sun is above the clouds. All we see are the clouds. If we allow it, cloudy days cloud our judgment and attitude. The clouds have its purpose in nourishing and replenishing the earth. The sun is always there to bring light.
Yes, there are difficult situations that bring cloudy days. It is normal to be afraid when you can’t see the sun.
Some tips to seeing the sun –
Get a buddy or friend that is a stand for your highest good. You can’t be a lone ranger.
Go to library and check out books that explain how to change you cloudy moods to sunshine, such as Law of Attraction, When Bad Things Happen to Good People, Man’s Search for Meaning
Join the WomenCo groups, such as Law of Attraction, or start a group.
Become a chooser and not a victim. Victims are not very attractive.
The sunshine is always there – within you. Trust your heart, listen to it.
You have to start with where you are. Leave the past in the past.
Make a collage of what you want to do, be and have
The sun does come out. You are the sun.

I have been trying to change careers for the past few years now, and I am very frustrated!!!
Although your story is inspirational, I have read a lot like it. I have gone back to school, earned certification in a field that I am very interrested in, and no one will give me the time of day! Apparently, certification means nothing without EXPERIENCE. I have had a few interviews, but they all wanted to know where my experience was.
I have tried to find someone to let me do an internship, but have had no luck. Now what?
I feel like all of my time and money was waisted.
I hate to leave discouraging feed back, but at this point, I am desperate! If anyone has any suggestions for me, I am very open for them.

Your story is wonderful and uplifting. I went back to school to get my BS Degree in Organizational Leadership. I graduated in May, 2004 with a major surgery for a
huge mass on my ovaries. It was Ovarian cancer - a 7 lb. tumor. I got to be bald for
a while and experience chemotherapy. Praise God I am healthy and healed now.
I'm working for a small company in sales and business has just dropped drastically
due to the economy. I am looking to go back inside for a corporation in a high paying
position to cover my house payments, student loan and living expenses.
So I don't have the time to go through any more schooling before I land a better job.
Your story really gives me courage to go for a challenging position that really stretches me.
Thanks so much.
completely healed and healthy now.

I'd like to say that your article lifted me out of my depressed state, but only a bit. I, unfortunately, left a horrible work situation by quitting WITHOUT a replacement job! It's been 6 weeks now, and I haven't been able to find anything else, and now I'm feeling desperate and feeling like such a loser! I know I was in an untenable situation, and quitting was a desperate act, but I should have thought this through a bit more! Now, I don't have a job, and I don't know what to do! Even the temp agencies haven't been very good about finding me a temp job!!! I just feel hopeless.
