The Musical Challenge
The music genome project in action.
August 21, 2008
I live very happily in this musical time warp. I listen to Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, and all the other greats from that area. I listen to opera and classical of almost any variety. (I dislike Peking Opera for it hurts my ears.) I listen to big band and swing styles, as well as tango and others less obvious.
When I turn on the radio here in my college town, I'm frustrated because I can't find a good jazz station. They have a good classical station, but sometimes one just needs variety. I find myself flipping through the stations unsatisfied by the modern musical selections, and most of those found on the "oldies" station. I can honestly say that I'm not a fan of any sort of really mainstream music since even the modern stuff I do like is not found on any of the radio stations that I'm aware of in this country.
Then I have to hear people blasting it out their car or home windows. I don't mind if they destroy their own ears, but when the music of this modern musical crap my grandfather loudly claims "... is nothing but a bunch of racket designed to make one go deaf!" I'm starting to agree with him when I hear it blaring out of my coworker's computer.
I challenge these people to explore the options beyond the popular radio. I challenge them to turn the radio down so they can enjoy it without disrespecting others. Start with your favourite artist on Pandora, and find out what your musical genome tastes are. Listen, learn and enjoy what else the world has to offer for you.

I, too, listen to Pandora radio, and I have it set for Frank Sinatra and that era of music.
