The past should not determine the future
Life is what you create it to be.

As a child being poor is not something you associate yourself with. However, the role models in your community influence your dreams. To all women out there, where I come from should not guide where I am heading to. I grew up going to school bare feet. Sometimes in freezing frosty mornings. I never felt poor nor disadvantage. I had the most wonderful childhood I will always cherish. Today I can say I am still poor financially but have achieved a lot. I am about to finish my PhD, a mother to three beautiful children and a wife to a supporting man. To me that is a lot of achievement and I still plan to do more.

I was all most about to come to the agreement that providing administrative services was not the thing for me. Like you I have had circumstances happen and did not let them determine who I am, what I am to do, or discourage me. Sometimes I ask God "Why me?", After reading this I received the confirmation I was looking for which is "This is not about me, it's what can you do about you" I am going to keep pursuing my goals and continuing to support the people I do. Thank you for this encouragement. I have four boys and a husband and I want to do what's right by them. Thank you everyone for sharing your stories to uplift people like me.

It's not where you've been, it's where you are going. We have to teach our children that they can achieve ALL things despite where they come from....and people can call you anything (poor, ugly, dumb, etc), it's what you answer to that's important.

So true, in this current Olympics the Jamaican gold medal winner in the 200mtr. is a young women from a very poor community, who is unknown to even most of her country's folkes. She has demonstrated that you can do it, despite being from the poorest of the poor.
