Unabashed intolerance & hate??? These ppl are being honest and I don't think it was in a spirit of hate at all. Just honest opinions. Isn't that one of the purposes of this website?

have you ever met any transgendered people for that matter? I have, they are plagued with depression and self-loathing.

I don't hate Thomas Beattie or anyone else for that matter. I worry for the state of mind Thomas must be in to go through a transgender process, live as a man post-surgery, only to then want to be pregnant and give birth. What it looks like me is that Thomas is fundamentally unhappy with himself and is searching for what will fill that void. If that is so then he is absolutely wrong and has only succeeded in damaging a little life with him. I don't hate Thomas, I feel sorry for him and sorry for his daughter.

Wonderful news -- congratulations to the happy, loving parents. And shame on those of you who have shown such ignorance in your comments here.

I am totally happy for them. Everyone has the right to a happy family. Aren't you happy for the women who get pregnant via in vitro fertilization? Should she not have those children, simply because it's not natural? So do you also believe surregate mothers are unethical also? I say just be happy for someone who has found true happiness! Congratulations Thomas Beatie!

I, too, am disheartened by the hate being spewed here.

No, Navy1wife: He did not do a full sex-reassignment surgery because it is extremely risky, especially from female-to-male. Male-to-female sex-reassignment has many less risks and that's why it's done much more frequently. Further, to everyone else: It hurts me to hear some of your unabashed intolerance. If two people are in love and want to have a child, and have the ability to do so (be it naturally, through a surrogate or through adoption) then why can't they?

I'm a little creeped out by it. I don't completely understand the decision to become a man, but still retain your female reproductive organs. That makes me think that deep down-he/she doesn't really want to be a man. I don't know...just a little lost I guess.

I feel that just because you can do something does not mean you should actually do it. There are some shades of grey that should be avoided. There are a lot of things that are legal, but that does not mean that it is ethical. This man and his wife new before they got married that his wife would not be able to conceive a child. The consequences to their actions does not just affect them, it now affects a child. Life is hard enough.

When people learn acceptance and tolerance of "the-other" the world will be a much better balanced place...no need to agree or even like; stay ambivalent or in hate if you choose; don't react adverse or rude or violent to "the-other" ---- just learn to adjust to difference; make adaptations to your beliefs and customs and room to embrace all that is human right...period -- ahhhh, right huh? in my dreams...smiles
